I Can See Your Halo-Halo (Easy Filipino Summer Dessert)

Plot twist: this is actually what Bey was singing about in her song 😇 Imagine that😂

Halo-halo is the Filipino dessert that pamilyas love to eat in the summer. This layered dessert features crushed ice, milk, and sweet beans and fruit that you mix-mix (the literal Tagalog translation of halo-halo.

You can buy the mixed beans and fruit separately, or simply buy jars that have them pre-assembled for halo-halo. The dessert usually calls for crushed ice and milk, but being the lactose-intolerant foodies we are, we froze crushed coconut milk (to sub for ice) and then used soymilk to top it off.

There really are no rules as to what ingredients you want to put in halo-halo! You can add any type of fruit or bean in many ways – fresh, frozen, dried, candied, jellied, you name it. Have fun with different combinations, or go the classic route with munngo, nata de coco, and langka!

Prep Time: 5 min

Cook time: 0 min

Servings: 4

Ingredients:

Layers:

  • 1 can coconut milk – freeze in a plastic bag, then crush like ice
  • 1 jar halo-halo fruits & beans mix – comes in a jar and is available at most asian markets
  • sweet red mung beans (munngo)
  • coconut jelly (nata de coco)
  • white beans
  • sweetened jackfruit (langka)
  • coconut strips (macapuno)

Toppings:

  • ube jam
  • coconut wafer
  • fresh plantain or banana
  • ube ice cream
  • roasted coconut
  • drizzle of milk (any type is fine!)

Consider trying these other great ingredients (optional):

  • caramelized pudding (leche flan)
  • tapioca pearls
  • mango
  • toasted almonds
  • condensed milk
  • fruity pebbles cereal

Recipe:

1. In a tall glass (use a highball or milkshake glass if you have one!), begin adding a couple spoonfuls of halo-halo mix to serve as your base layer. Then, add a layer of frozen coconut milk. Add a little bit of each remaining layer (feel free to do repeat layers) until you have filled the glass up to 1.5 inches from the top.

2. Add the toppings of your choice! We recommend adding ice cream first, then the other toppings. Try using this ice cream scoop on Amazon.

3. Drizzle with milk so it becomes a little slushy.

4. Mix mix, and enjoy!

Notes:

  • To eat halo-halo, we recommend using both a spoon and a straw.
  • Make sure you really mix it all up so it becomes a slushy mix (watch out, it could get messy!), then dig your spoon in to grab as much of that yummy halo-halo goodness as you can.
  • Use the straw to drink the liquid, either while you eat it, or save it to the end for a heavenly shake!
